Sometimes they asked if she was part fish. Maybe somewhere deep inside she was, but on the outside she looked like the fourteen year old girl she was. Her skin was tanned and her eyes matched the ocean. The sun was bright, making the sand hot and the girl's brown hair shine. The blond and red in it really seemed to pop in the sunlight. The girl decided that it must have been around three in the afternoon.
Nicole quickly stripped down to her swim suit and ran for the water, the hot sand burning her feet. When she hit the water she stopped and sighed. The cold water was refreshing and cooled her feet. After a moment she took off into the water again. When she was about waist deep she dove under, avoiding a wave.
She opened her eyes and smiled. She kicked and swam forward, under the waves. She had always felt at home in the water. She didn't need to worry about anything and she could just think. Underwater no one else could bother her. She swam to the surface, took a breath of air and dove under again. There was a little reef not far from shore where colorful fish liked to gather. She would repeat the task of going up and down for an hour just to watch the fish, but that wasn't her destination now. She was in a sandy spot where she knew she could find seashells.
